He said: "I'm running 10 miles a day, all over the valley, as I've given up smoking again. I'd been dreading it as usual, but I've rediscovered that there is actually nothing quite as wonderful as running through the woods. There really isn't."

I started smoking again and stopped over the weekend. At dinner on Saturday night, I sat next to a non-smoker and apologised for blowing all over him, my last hurrah. "Why stop if you enjoy it?" he said. "Probably won't kill you, you know. There are plenty of old people who smoke, and plenty of old people who drink, for that matter. There are no old fat people, though."

The war may be over. The screeching busybodies may have won. But the more cigarettes are proscribed, the greater I find their allure. Alex James, the pop-star-turned-writer/farmer, understands. "It's big, it's clever, it's naughty and it's dangerous," he says. "You're more or less a criminal if you smoke. Fantastic."

Alex James born Steven Alexander James on November 21, 1968 is an English musician, songwriter and journalist. He is the bass player and occasional vocalist of the band Blur. As a journalist, James writes for British newspapers The Independent, The Observer, The Times, The Sunday Times, as well as Q magazine, The Spectator and The Idler.
